Buy Yelp Reviews
Platform: Yelp

Build a Yelp profile that works with the recommendation algorithm, not against it.

Yelp plays by different rules than Google or Trustpilot — its recommendation software filters reviews automatically, and directly asking for reviews can backfire. Here's how Yelp reputation management actually works.

What makes Yelp different

Yelp shows up heavily in local and branded search for restaurants, home services, and consumer businesses, often alongside Google in the same search results page. But the mechanics behind the rating are genuinely different from Google or Trustpilot, and a strategy copied from those platforms can actively hurt you here.

Yelp's recommendation software

Every Yelp review gets evaluated by an automated system that decides whether it counts toward your visible star rating and review count, or gets moved into a separate section at the bottom of the page, visible but excluded from the math. Yelp doesn't publish the exact criteria, but reviewer account history, activity level, and patterns that resemble solicited reviews are all known factors.

The practical effect: a business can have genuinely more reviews than its visible count shows, and a sudden batch of reviews — even real ones — arriving in a short window is more likely to get filtered than the same reviews trickling in naturally over time.

Why this matters more than on other platforms

On Google or Trustpilot, a compliant review-request system is the main lever for improving your rating. On Yelp, requesting reviews directly works against you — the recovery plan has to route around the filter instead of through it.

Encouraging reviews without soliciting them

Since directly asking violates Yelp's guidance and increases filtering risk, the compliant path looks different: making your Yelp page easy to find organically (a link on your website and social profiles is fine — a direct request is not), delivering a consistently good experience worth mentioning unprompted, and being patient with a slower, more organic review pace than Google or Trustpilot typically produce.

Responding to Yelp reviews

Yelp lets businesses respond publicly, visible to anyone reading the review, or privately through a direct message to the reviewer. A public response works as a permanent, visible record of how the business handles problems; a private message is better suited to resolving specifics — order numbers, refund offers, account details — that don't belong in a public thread. See our review response management service for our approach.

Identifying potentially inappropriate reviews

Where the line is

Yelp removes reviews that violate its Content Guidelines — not-a-genuine-experience claims, conflicts of interest, threats, or hate speech. It does not remove accurate negative reviews just because a business disagrees with them. We help clients tell the difference and flag content correctly for content that actually qualifies. Common mistakes we see

Directly asking customers for a Yelp review

Yelp's terms explicitly discourage businesses from soliciting reviews — doing so can make the review more likely to get caught by the recommendation software, the opposite of the intended effect.

Ignoring the "not recommended" section

Filtered reviews still exist and can still be read by a determined visitor. Treating them as invisible means missing complaint patterns that are actually there.

Generic responses to every review

A copy-pasted reply reads as dismissive on Yelp just as much as anywhere else — and Yelp responses are fully public by default.

Assuming a low review count means a low rating problem

On Yelp specifically, a thin recommended-review count can be a filtering issue as much as a genuine feedback issue — the two need different fixes.

Timeline expectations

  • First 30 days: audit complete, filtered-vs-recommended review gap mapped, response process established for new reviews.
  • 60–90 days: response rate on negative reviews approaches 100%, profile and photo quality improved, early signal on whether filtering is easing.
  • 6+ months: recommended review count grows organically, recurring complaint themes addressed at the operational level, not just the review level.
