How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses a standard weighted-average model: it solves for the number of new reviews, at your expected new-review average, that would pull your overall rating up to your target — given how many reviews you already have. Only Yelp's "Recommended" reviews count toward your visible star average, so enter that number, not your total review count.
Recommended vs. Not Recommended Reviews
Yelp's recommendation software automatically filters some reviews into a separate "Not Recommended" section, based on signals like how established the reviewer's account is. Those filtered reviews don't count toward your displayed rating at all — which is why this calculator, and any Yelp rating math, only works accurately when based on your Recommended review count.
How Many Positive Reviews Offset a 1-Star Review?
There's no fixed number — it depends entirely on how many Recommended reviews you already have. A single 1-star review pulls the average of a 10-review profile far more than it pulls a 1,000-review profile. Use the calculator above with your own current rating and review count to model exactly how many new positive reviews it would take to absorb a specific negative review's impact.
