The math behind rating recovery

A star rating is a weighted average of every review a business has received. That means it responds to two levers: how many new reviews come in, and what those new reviews average. A business with 120 reviews at 2.3 stars needs meaningfully fewer new 4.8-star reviews to reach 4.0 than a business with 1,200 reviews at the same starting point — the existing volume acts as inertia against the average moving.

Worked example

Current: 2.3★ across 120 reviews. Target: 4.0★. New genuine reviews averaging: 4.8★. Solving the weighted-average equation for the number of new reviews needed gives you the number the calculator above returns — the same formula, applied to your specific numbers instead of this illustrative one.

Worked example: a small, low-review-count business

Current: 3.5★ across only 15 reviews. Target: 4.5★. New genuine reviews averaging: 4.9★. Because the existing base is so small, it takes roughly 38 new reviews to pull the average up a full point — more than double the current review count, even though the gap between 3.5 and 4.5 looks modest on paper. A small base has almost no inertia, so it moves fast once new reviews start coming in, but it also needs a proportionally large number of them relative to what's already there to get a statistically meaningful shift.

Worked example: a high-volume business

Current: 2.8★ across 800 reviews. Target: 4.0★. New genuine reviews averaging: 4.8★. Here it takes roughly 1,200 new reviews — 1.5 times the existing review count — to close the gap. That's the inertia effect in action: 800 existing reviews are a heavy anchor, so even a strong, consistent review-generation program needs sustained months of new reviews to move a rating this size, not a short burst.

This is a mathematical estimate based on a simple weighted-average model of your public rating. It is not a projection of how Trustpilot's TrustScore or Google's internal rating algorithm will specifically respond, since both platforms may weight recency, review length, or other signals differently and don't publish their exact formulas. It's also not a promise that we can deliver any specific number of reviews at any specific rating — real customers determine their own ratings based on their real experience.
