How to Respond to Tripadvisor Reviews

Tripadvisor calls a business reply a "Management Response" — and unlike most platforms, you can't edit it after posting, only delete and repost. Use the generator below to write one worth getting right the first time.

What Is a Tripadvisor Management Response?

It's Tripadvisor's own name for a business reply, posted through the Management Center for a claimed listing and published publicly beneath the guest's review. It reads to every future traveler browsing the property — not just the original reviewer — which is exactly why hospitality businesses treat it as seriously as the review itself.

How to Respond to a Negative Tripadvisor Review

Reference the specific complaint — "the room wasn't ready at the promised check-in time" reads completely differently from "sorry for any inconvenience." Take ownership of what's genuinely the property's to own, avoid arguing the guest's account publicly, and give a concrete next step.

Tripadvisor Review Response Examples

1-bubble, room cleanliness, unresolved

"Thank you for taking the time to share this — a room not meeting that standard isn't the experience we aim for, and I'm sorry. We're looking into what happened with housekeeping that day. Please reach out to us directly with your stay dates so we can look into it specifically."

2-bubble, restaurant service complaint, resolved

"I'm sorry the service didn't meet the standard we hold ourselves to that evening — that's on us. We've addressed this with the team. If anything's still unresolved, please reach out directly and we'll make sure it's handled."

1-bubble, no matching reservation

"We take feedback like this seriously, but we don't have a reservation matching these details in our system. If you can reach out directly with your stay dates, we'd like to look into it properly."

How to Respond to Positive Tripadvisor Reviews

Keep it short and specific — thank the guest and mention the one thing they actually praised, rather than a generic "thanks for staying with us" that could sit under any five-bubble review. It doesn't need the depth of a negative-review reply, but a genuine response signals an actively managed property to every traveler comparing listings.

Tripadvisor 5-Bubble Review Response Examples

Hotel stay praise

"Really glad the stay went well — the team works hard on exactly that, so it's great to hear it showed. Thanks for taking the time to write this up, and we hope to host you again."

Restaurant praise

"Thank you for the kind words about dinner — I'll make sure the kitchen and front-of-house team see this. Looking forward to welcoming you back."

Tripadvisor Management Response Templates

These work as a starting structure — acknowledge, address the specific point, give the honest next step, close — but since Management Responses can't be edited afterward, use a template as a draft to refine before posting, not something to paste in and fix later.

Template: stay issue

"Dear [Name], you're right that [specific issue] wasn't the experience we aim for, and I'm sorry. We're looking into what happened so it doesn't recur. Please reach out to us directly so we can make this right. — [Manager name], [Property name]"

Template: thank-you for a positive review

"Dear [Name], thank you for the wonderful review — really glad [specific thing praised] made your stay. We appreciate you taking the time to share this and hope to see you again."

How Long Should a Tripadvisor Response Be?

Tripadvisor doesn't publish an official length limit. A five-bubble thank-you fits in one or two sentences; a negative review describing a real stay issue usually needs three to five sentences to acknowledge it properly and give a next step — since it can't be quietly edited afterward, draft it once, review it, then post.

What Should You Never Say in a Management Response?

Never reveal the reviewer's identity — Tripadvisor's content rules specifically prohibit this. Never include promotional material, discount offers, or links; Tripadvisor treats Management Responses as informational, not marketing space. Never claim a refund or fix happened if it hasn't, and never argue the guest's account point-by-point in public. Because responses can't be edited after posting, get all of this right before you publish, not after.

What If Responding Isn't Enough?

A thoughtful Management Response handles the visible conversation on that specific review — it doesn't, by itself, move your bubble rating or your Popularity Ranking, both of which depend on review quality, quantity, and recency across your whole listing. If the underlying problem is a damaged rating or too few recent reviews, that's a review-volume question worth solving alongside, not instead of, a good response.
