How Do Yelp Reviews Work?
Yelp reviews work differently from most other platforms because of one feature almost no business fully understands until it affects them: the recommendation software.

Yelp review management is the process of monitoring, responding to, and understanding the reviews and recommendation-software behavior tied to a business's Yelp Business Page. Unlike most review platforms, not every review a business receives counts toward its visible rating — that single mechanic changes how Yelp strategy has to work.
Reviews vs. what actually shows in your rating
Every review submitted to a Yelp Business Page gets evaluated by Yelp's recommendation software, which decides whether it counts toward the visible star rating and review count, or gets moved to a separate section at the bottom of the page — visible to anyone who scrolls down, but excluded from the math. Yelp doesn't publish its exact criteria, but reviewer account history, activity level, and patterns that resemble solicited reviews are known factors.

Why Yelp discourages direct solicitation
Unlike Google, Trustpilot, Facebook, Tripadvisor, and Sitejabber — all of which permit a business to directly ask customers for a review, as long as it's fair and unconditional — Yelp's guidelines take a stricter position. Directly requesting a review, even neutrally, is discouraged and can increase the chance the resulting review gets filtered, since a burst of reviews shortly after being asked resembles the pattern the recommendation software is built to catch.
- Make your Yelp page easy to find organically — a link from your website is acceptable; a direct in-person or email ask is not.
- Focus on delivering an experience worth mentioning unprompted rather than engineering a request moment.
- Expect Yelp review growth to be slower and more organic than Google or Trustpilot.
Responding to reviews
Businesses can respond to any review publicly, visible to anyone browsing the page, or privately through a direct message to the reviewer. A public response works as a permanent record of how problems get handled; a private message suits specifics — order numbers, refund offers — that don't belong in a public thread.
Can negative Yelp reviews be removed?
Only if they violate Yelp's Content Guidelines — not-a-genuine-experience claims, conflicts of interest, threats, or hate speech. A negative but genuine review typically stays up even if the business disputes it. See our negative review management page for how to tell the difference and file a dispute correctly.
