Google Play vs. Google: Which Matters More for Your Business?
"Google reviews" can mean two completely different things for a business with an app: the app's Play Store rating, and the local-business reviews on its Google Business Profile. Here is how to tell them apart and manage both.

"We need to fix our Google reviews" is a sentence that can mean two entirely different things for a business that both has a physical or service-area presence and publishes an app — and mixing them up wastes real effort. Google Play reviews are the star ratings and written feedback tied to an app's listing in the Play Store, tracked in Google Play Console. Google Business Profile reviews are the local-business reviews tied to a business's Google Maps and Search listing, tracked in a completely different Google system.
These are two independent products from the same company, with separate databases, separate review policies, separate moderation systems, and no data flow between them. A business with both needs to manage each on its own terms.
What each one is actually built around
Google Play reviews exist for one purpose: rating an installed Android app. Only someone who has actually installed the app can leave one, and the rating sits directly beside the install button on the Play Store listing, feeding Google Play's own search and ranking system for apps specifically.
Google Business Profile reviews exist for a local or service-area business's presence on Google Maps and in local Search results. Anyone with a Google account can leave one — there's no install or purchase requirement — and the rating factors into local search visibility (the map pack) and the general trust signal a searcher sees before visiting or contacting the business.

How each is actually used differently
A user leaving a Play Store review is almost always evaluating the app itself — does it work, is it worth the storage space, did it crash — and reading Play Store reviews before installing is a common, deliberate step in deciding whether to download at all.
A person checking a Google Business Profile is evaluating whether to visit, call, or hire the business in the physical or service world — a plumber, a restaurant, a dental practice — and has typically never touched the company's app, if it even has one. These are different audiences, at different decision points, evaluating different things.
Why businesses confuse the two, and why that matters
The confusion usually shows up in one of two ways: a business assumes that responding to (or improving) its Google Business Profile reviews will somehow affect its Play Store rating, or it assumes that Play Store review management tools apply to its local listing. Neither is true — they require separate logins, separate reply tools, separate policies on incentivized reviews, and separate strategies for review generation.
Getting this distinction right matters operationally: the team improving app UX and fixing crashes to move the Play Store rating is often not the same team managing customer service responses on the Google Business Profile, and treating them as one initiative usually means one of the two gets neglected.

Google Play reviews and Google Business Profile reviews are not the same product wearing two names — they're separate Google systems serving separate audiences, with separate management tools and no shared data. A business with both an app and a local presence needs a distinct strategy for each: fixing app quality and prompting in-app ratings for Play Store, and managing customer-facing responses and request flows for Google Business Profile.
